Bowler

History

Andrew 'Drew' Bowler modified a Land Rover Series I so he could compete in it, found other people wanting the same, and in 1985 started building them on the family farm at Belper in Derbyshire with eight staff designing and making aftermarket parts and rally raid vehicles. Bowler effectively created the British dedicated off-road competition car: the tubular-framed Tomcat came first, then the Wildcat, whose manufacturing rights were sold to Qt Services in 2007, and then the Nemesis, which succeeded it. Bowler cars competed successfully in international rally raid, including the Dakar.

The Land Rover relationship was long informal and was formalised as a brand partnership in 2012, which produced the Defender Challenge by Bowler one-make rally series of 2014-16 and a later Bowler Defender Challenge on the new Defender 90 from 2021. It was in that period, in 2014-15, that Jaguar Land Rover's Special Operations division commissioned Bowler to build the Spectre Defenders: ten Santorini Black 110 crew cabs converted to an extreme SVX specification — nicknamed 'Bigfoot' on set for their 37-inch tyres — with the diesel raised to about 180 bhp, full internal and external roll cages, harnesses, Recaro seats, rose-jointed suspension on Bilstein rally dampers and a hydraulic handbrake, for the Austrian Alps chase of the 2015 Bond film.

Drew Bowler died suddenly on 14 November 2016; the company carried on at Belper with members of his family in the team. On 18 December 2019 Jaguar Land Rover acquired Bowler and folded it into Special Vehicle Operations, keeping it at its Belper premises; some accounts say the purchase was out of administration. Under JLR ownership Bowler announced the CSP 575 in 2020, a Defender-based machine using the 5.0-litre supercharged Jaguar AJ-V8, and the Bulldog.

It did not last. In October 2024 JLR opened consultation with the 28 staff at the Queen Street works in Belper, with reported losses of over £6 million, and the factory was wound up at the end of 2024, its operations consolidated into JLR's own business with servicing, repairs, spares and upgrade parts continuing through Classic. Staff were offered other JLR roles or enhanced redundancy. The Bowler name survives as a JLR marque rather than as a Derbyshire manufacturer.
