MMB International

Macclesfield Motor Bodies, latterly trading as MMB International (MMBi), a Cheshire specialist that built bespoke ambulances and mobile clinics — including the tall box-bodied Defender 127/130 ambulances used by St John Ambulance and the British Red Cross. The ambulance business ended in liquidation in 2014.

History

Macclesfield Motor Bodies (U.K.) Limited was incorporated at Companies House on 10 May 1974 (company no. 01169842); it dropped the '(U.K.)' from its name on 5 December 2003. The firm's own trading style was MMB International, or MMBi, and its works were on the Hurdsfield Industrial Estate at Queen's Avenue, Macclesfield. Its business was custom special-purpose vehicles — chiefly ambulances, patient-transport vehicles and mobile clinics — built to order rather than in volume, with a substantial export trade; a 2010 shipping case in the English courts records the company selling three ambulances for delivery to buyers in Libya.

MMB's Land Rover work is the reason it appears here. The company mounted tall, square, insulated ambulance bodies on the long Defender 127 and 130 chassis for organisations that needed an ambulance able to leave the road: St John Ambulance in Britain and the Channel Islands and the British Red Cross among them. A 2000-built Defender 130 Td5 ambulance supplied to St John Ambulance Guernsey — bodied and fully equipped for £73,279 ex works — is preserved in the Land Rover Heritage Collection. Vehicles of this type proved their worth in the 2004 Boscastle flood, when conventional ambulances could not reach casualties.

The later corporate history is fragmented. MMB International Blue Light Ltd (company no. 08232069), trading from the Hurdsfield Industrial Estate address with a registered office in Stockport, passed a winding-up resolution on 23 July 2014 and went into creditors' voluntary liquidation, ending the ambulance-building business. The original Macclesfield Motor Bodies Limited, by then a property company registered in Sheffield, was itself dissolved on 16 March 2021. Some accounts credit MMBi with military contracts including Irish and Pakistani forces and with building 1989 St John vehicles to a Locomotors design; these could not be confirmed from a primary or otherwise reliable source and are not asserted here.
