The Meteor Works

History

The Meteor Works describes itself as the combination of a group of friends' passion for design, innovation and exploration, a venture that began as a hobby while they were at college. It does not name its founders, give a founding date or state where it is based; the only contact it publishes is an email address, and its shop prices are in US dollars. Its team is said to be fluent in several languages, and it claims over a decade of experience in the import side of the work.

The business has three strands. It sources, imports and ships vintage four-wheel-drives internationally, door to door. It runs an engineering department that remakes and, it says, improves on obsolete classic components using modern methods, and sells accessories such as grille badges and stickers. And it restores and sells vehicles, documenting its own fleet in an online garage — at the time of writing a 1979 Series III ACR Marshall ambulance, a 1974 Series III TACR-1 airfield crash tender, a 1978 Series III 109 diesel, a 1975 Series III 88, and two Series I 86-inch trucks of 1954 and 1956.

Project One in that garage is the ambulance, which the firm calls 'Leyland' and describes as the first truck in its garage. Its recorded history is Royal Air Force service as an airfield crash rescue ambulance at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire, followed by St John Ambulance at Lytham St Annes in Lancashire. The RAF version of the Marshall-bodied 109 ambulance is recorded in reference sources as FV18068, distinguished by a heavy front crash bar and a 240-volt shoreline socket to keep it charged and ready.

The name echoes the Rover Company's own Meteor Works — the Coventry factory whose name Rover carried over to the Solihull plant where the Land Rover was developed in 1947-48 — though nothing on the firm's site says whether that is the intended reference. Because its base, founders and founding date are all unstated, this record is left at draft.
