History
Bay Search & Rescue (BSAR) was founded in 1999 by two experienced coastguards, Gary Parsons and Adrian Swenson, after a rescue in which a man trapped in the sands of Morecambe Bay came close to drowning as the tide made: the incident ran for ten hours and needed thirty-two emergency personnel to hand-carry heavy equipment out across the bay. The team's first answer was a converted race hovercraft — originally trading as Bay Hovercraft Rescue — which cut a three-hour walk out onto the sands to about twelve minutes. It became a registered charity in 2001 (charity no. 1090880) and is a member of the National Independent Lifeboats Association.
The hovercraft could not carry enough kit or casualties, so BSAR moved to tracked, amphibious Hägglunds BV206 all-terrain vehicles built for the Swedish Army's Arctic role — the team now runs three, plus two Arancia A380 inflatable rescue boats, a purpose-built SAR airboat, a SHERP amphibious ATV and a 12-tonne Mercedes transporter to move the Hägglunds outside the immediate area. The team's own website has described a rescue fleet of around twelve vehicles stationed at Flookburgh, Milnthorpe, Levens, Bolton-le-Sands and Penrith, crewed by roughly twenty to twenty-two operational volunteers on call around the clock and answering some 20–30 callouts a year. BSAR searched for survivors for eight to ten hours during the February 2004 Morecambe Bay cockling disaster, and signed a memorandum of understanding with Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service in October 2009 that made it a county-wide technical support unit.
The Land Rover in this record is the team's road-going ambulance and command vehicle. BSAR's own history page records that the team operates "a Landrover 110 ambulance from Milnthorpe to allow cover and command and control on the east side of the Bay", though photographs of the vehicle — registered AX04 VXJ, a 2004 car — show a long-wheelbase Defender 130 double cab carrying an aluminium box ambulance body, lettered BAY SEARCH & RESCUE / ALL TERRAIN RESCUE TEAM and AMBULANCE, in white with blue-and-yellow battenburg, a raised air intake, a light bar and a roof-mounted spare wheel. The team has since taken a Toyota Hilux into the ambulance role, seen at the Flookburgh base alongside the Hägglund sheds; the Defender's present status is not documented in the sources consulted.
