Carawagon Mobile Clinic
The Carawagon Model 80 mobile clinic, one of R.J. Searle's standard 'special versions' of the Series IIA 109 three-door Carawagon: a roving clinic for remote villages with an elevating roof, folding stretcher, sink and water tank, sterilisation unit, vaccine refrigerator, patient couch, nurse's seat, air conditioning, a tent extension and flashing beacon lights.
History
R.J. Searle Ltd of Sunbury-on-Thames built the Carawagon camper conversions on Land Rovers from the 1960s and, alongside the campers, offered standard 'special versions' of the Model 80 three-door 109 for export and aid customers. The mobile clinic was designed as a roving clinic visiting remote villages to give vaccinations and routine health care: it came with the elevating roof, cupboards, a folding stretcher, a sink and water tap fed from a large water tank with a foot pump, a water filtration system, a sterilisation unit, a vaccine refrigerator, a patient couch, a nurse's seat, air conditioning, a tent extension for the rear door and flashing beacon lights. The source preserves the brochure summary and an interior view of the clinic fit; numbers built and customers are not recorded.
The registry's model is its civilian green Carawagon hard top with a black grille, red crosses, blue beacons, roof stores that can be dropped, and the tent extension pitched behind the rear door (shown in the registry renders only); the interior fittings are not modelled.
