Casablanca Breakdown Series III 109 — front three-quarter render

History

Morocco kept Series Land Rovers in daily work long after Britain had retired them, and around Casablanca a whole trade of independent recovery operators grew up on Series III 109 pickups: cheap to run, able to tow on dirt roads, and easy to fit with a home-made recovery frame. They are painted to be noticed — red with white roofs and bumpers, chrome bull bars hung with blue spot lamps, beacons on the cab — and cruise the highways and rural roads looking for stranded drivers.

The Flickr photograph shows one such truck on a road outside Casablanca in March 2010: red Series III 109 truck cab with a white roof, white vent panels under the windscreen, a white bumper and chrome bull bar with two blue spot lamps, small blue lamps at the screen pillars, orange beacons on the cab roof corners and a red hoop frame over the front of the bed carrying the spare wheel and a warning triangle. Its Moroccan plate reads 23074 with a regional code; the Arabic letter between is rendered as a dash. The registry model reproduces that vehicle in the Breakdown group. The operator is not identified.
