Czech Army Armoured Defender 110 Mk.2

History

The Czech Ministry of Defence's first discreetly armoured Defender 110s were Military Police hard tops shown at IDET 2005; a second batch, the Mk.2, went to Afghanistan with the Czech contingent. In October 2008 Yves Debay visited the small Czech unit attached to the Dutch-led Task Force Uruzgan at FOB Hadrian, some 60 km west of Tarin Kowt: 63 soldiers from an NBC battalion who had swapped their BRDM-2 armoured cars for armoured Land Rovers and whose task was to guard the compound and watch the surrounding area from Observation Post Java. His photographs show the Mk.2 with the roof over most of the rear compartment removed and a ring mount, clamped to the internal roll cage, carrying a PKB machine gun — removable so riflemen could provide top cover instead — plus a bumper-mounted Warn winch behind a brush guard, pierced-steel Wolf-style wheels, side lockers, pioneer-tool clips, a raised air intake, mesh guards over the glazing, a belly plate against mines and IEDs, an ISAF roundel and Czech flags. The plate carried AMT Motor dealer details, suggesting that Prague dealership supplied the batch, though some sources name SVOS of Přelouč — builders of the PERUN MPMV that replaced the D110 Kajman — as the converter. Yves Debay was killed in Syria in 2013.

The registry's model is the Defender 110 hard top in olive with the rear roof opened, the rail-edged opening, ring mount and PKB, mesh guards, brush guard and winch, bonnet spare, intake, lockers, belly plate, flag mast and roundels from the photographs; the plate is approximated.
