Dale Bull-Angledozer

History

J. B. Howie of Salford Priors, Evesham, Worcestershire — the same Vale of Evesham that produced the Bates fire appliances — sold a pair of front-mounted implements for the Land Rover under the Dale name, approved by the Rover Company: a bull-angledozer and a snow-plough, interchangeable on fixing brackets that could stay on the vehicle, either one fitted in under five minutes. The 1958 leaflet, received by the Automobile Association's library that December, pitched them at builders, contractors, farmers and councils.

The angledozer blade is 66 inches long and 17 inches deep and weighs 282 lb; the snow-plough blade is 78 inches by 22 inches at 356 lb. Both are raised by a single-acting hydraulic ram worked from a hand pump in the cab, within reach of the driver, and both can be angled right or left — 25 degrees for the dozer, 30 for the plough — against an angle stop. The blade profile was designed to give what Howie called a rolling action to spoil or snow. No drilling or alteration to the Land Rover was needed; the mounting frame runs back along the chassis to brackets behind the front wheels, as the brochure drawing shows.

This record follows the bulldozer form, on a 109-inch Series II with the 2.25-litre petrol four. Sales figures are not recorded.
