Defender 147 Stretch

History

Land Rover South Africa's Rosslyn plant assembled Defenders for local sale, and several Pretoria and Johannesburg specialists offered stretched versions: the 147, with a third pair of side doors inserted behind the front doors and the wheelbase lengthened by 37 inches (940 mm) to 147 inches, seating eleven across four rows for game-viewing, mine transport and big families. Wikipedia's Defender history lists the 147 among the low-volume derivatives. The example offered by Classic Sterne in Germany — grey with a white roof, A-bar, side steps and white steel wheels on big tyres — shows the six side doors and rear quarter windows of the conversion.

The registry's model is built from the 110 station wagon with the section behind the front doors moved back 940 mm and an extra door and pillar inserted, plus A-bar, steps and rear spare.
