Defender 6×6 Fire & Rescue

History

A small number of Defenders were stretched to six-wheel configuration and bodied as compact fire appliances, combining a crew cab with a high equipment body, pump, water tank and roof ladder rack - a formula for airfields, proving grounds and industrial sites that needed a genuine off-road fire engine smaller than a conventional appliance. Only a handful of such 6×6 Defender fire engines are recorded worldwide, and individual vehicles differ in converter, drivetrain and equipment; ex-Ministry of Defence 6×6 TDCi Defender fire appliances have also appeared on the surplus market.

The best-documented example - and the closest match to this record's user-supplied reference photograph of a red 6×6 crew-cab appliance - began life in 1998 as a standard-wheelbase Defender station wagon and was converted to 6×6 by Land Rover's special vehicles operation together with fire-appliance specialist GB Fire. It served as the company fire appliance at the Jaguar Land Rover proving ground at Gaydon, Warwickshire, until around 2015-16, was sold on by Land Rover Classic in 2017, and was then comprehensively refurbished by ACHSV - including a new Godiva pump - to serve as the private works fire appliance of the DCS Group in Banbury.

The identification of the game's model with any single converter is uncertain: the record is kept as a representative composite of the 6×6 Defender fire appliance type, with the Gaydon/GB Fire vehicle as its anchor example. Carmichael's earlier six-wheel fire conversions, which this formula echoes, were built on the Range Rover (see the TACR2 record) rather than the Defender.
