Foley Defender 6×6
A Foley Specialist Vehicles six-wheel Defender: a 110 station wagon stretched to take a third axle, driven through a Foley-made transfer case on the second axle while the original Land Rover transfer box, axles and coil suspension stay in place — one of the conversions the firm has offered on 90, 110 and 130 chassis since it began modifying Land Rovers in 1966.
History
Foley Specialist Vehicles has been modifying Land Rovers since 1966, and its six-wheel conversion is the most visible thing it does: a Defender with a third axle, offered on 90, 110 and 130 bases and also supplied as a kit. The method keeps as much of the Land Rover as possible. The original transfer case, axles and coil suspension remain; a custom-made transfer case on the second axle takes drive rearward to the third, so all six wheels are driven without redesigning the front of the vehicle.
The body is extended to cover the added wheelbase — here a station wagon, in green, from the firm's conversion gallery — and the load bed or passenger space grows with it. Foley also builds a premium version, the Defcon 6×6, with a new GM LS3 V8 and six-speed automatic, panoramic glazing and a bespoke interior; this record is the ordinary conversion, not that.
The firm publishes no production figures and no fixed specification, since each vehicle is built to order on a customer's Defender, so the engine is whatever the donor carried — a 300 Tdi, Td5 or Puma depending on its year.
