Hotspur Hussar

History

The Hotspur name entered the armoured Land Rover world in the late 1970s, when the Royal Ulster Constabulary produced armoured Series III Land Rovers named after the Hotspur armour plate used in their construction. Commercially, the name was carried by Hotspur Armoured Products, a Welsh firm that offered a range of armoured Land Rover conversions for police and military customers, from discreetly protected patrol vehicles to the fully armoured internal-security types.

The Hussar, first shown at the 1984 British Army Equipment Exhibition, was the largest of the family: an armoured personnel carrier on a lengthened Land Rover One Ten chassis carrying an additional powered rear axle, with the driver able to select 6x4 or 6x6 drive to suit the terrain. The all-steel hull was proofed against 7.62 mm ball ammunition at 25 metres, with floor protection against anti-personnel mine and grenade fragments, armoured glass, and a protected fuel tank. A commander and driver sat up front with space for around a dozen equipped troops in the rear compartment, which was fitted with vision blocks and firing ports along the sides and accessed by side and rear doors. The standard engine was the 134 bhp 3.5-litre Rover V8 petrol, with a 3.9-litre diesel offered as an option, alongside extras including a rotating one-man turret with 7.62 mm machine-gun mount, electrically fired grenade dischargers, run-flat tyres, searchlights and public-address equipment.

Recorded export sales came to around 124 vehicles: 110 for Egypt, nine for Sri Lanka and five for the Bahrain police. Variants offered included a field ambulance, an internal-security vehicle and a communications/command vehicle, alongside the smaller 4x4 Hotspur Skirmisher. Accounts of the marque's later history conflict: one reference records the Hotspur division being absorbed into Penman Engineering of Dumfries in 1986, while another dates Hussar production from 1987 to 1997, and no later sales figures were published.
