KILCAR QRIH LAD One Ten Soft Top
KILCAR, the Land Rover One Ten soft top of the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars' REME Light Aid Detachment on Operation GRANBY in 1991, with bumper recovery winch and GPMG mount, in in-theatre stone paint with thinned RAF pink camouflage and loaded with kit — later used in Land Rover's post-war advertising.
History
Joint-Forces.com's 'On the eve of war' series records the vehicles of 7th Armoured Brigade in the Saudi desert in January 1991 as they waited for the ground war. KILCAR — Irish Hussars vehicles carried the names of Irish places — was a One Ten soft top of the regiment's REME Light Aid Detachment, the fitters who kept the Challengers running. Photographed with its doors off and the canvas rolled up on the hoops under a cargo net, it wore stone paint locally applied over the green with faint patches of thinned RAF desert pink, a bull bar carrying a recovery winch and pioneer tools, a bedroll on the bonnet, kit bags and jerrycans hung along the sides, a whip aerial and a GPMG mount on the rear hoop. After the war the photograph was used in Land Rover's advertising. The LAD served through the liberation of Kuwait and into southern Iraq.
The registry's model is a doorless One Ten in stone with pink patches, hoops with rolled canvas and net, bags and jerrycans, bonnet bedroll, bull bar with winch and tools, aerial and GPMG; in the game it fires the gun and carries winch pickups.
