Moy 109 conveyor Land Rover — front three-quarter render

History

The Moy Conveyor was the idea of Peter Moy, who saw that a Land Rover carrying its own powered conveyor could drive up to an airliner and load or unload baggage without separate ground equipment. The conveyor system was conceived and designed by Moy himself, with the conversion work carried out in association with Precision Engineering Products (Suffolk) Ltd. An earlier prototype had been built on a Series I in 1958; this long-wheelbase version began life as a 1958 Series II 109" press-fleet vehicle (registration YAC 498, chassis 151800020a, 2.25-litre petrol) which was sold to Peter Moy in May 1960 and converted with a heavily altered upper body carrying the conveyor.

Production versions of the Moy Conveyor were built on the shorter Series II 88" chassis and delivered to British European Airways (BEA) and the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) at London's Heathrow Airport, where they were used for baggage handling. The 109" vehicle is believed to be the only one built on the long-wheelbase chassis. It later passed into the care of the REME Museum at Bordon, and from there joined the Dunsfold Collection in 2009 as part of a vehicle swap, where it is preserved today.
