MLR40 Otokar

History

Otokar of Sakarya, part of Turkey's Koç Group, moved from toll-manufacturing leaf-sprung Land Rovers (from 1966) to full licence production of the coil-sprung Defender family in 1987, assembling Defender 90, 110 and 130 types from Solihull CKD kits with locally made chassis and wheels to satisfy Turkish content rules. Production for the Turkish Armed Forces, Jandarma and export customers continued for roughly a quarter of a century, ending shortly before the original Defender itself went out of production.

Among the more distinctive Otokar products was a Defender 90 gunship: an open, split-windscreen soft-top carrying the American 105 mm M40A1 recoilless rifle on a pedestal mount, with a three-part wheel ramp on the loadbed and stowage for six ready rounds — two either side of the ramp and two more under the left rear seat. The concept revives the wartime 'portée' idea of a gun fought from the vehicle, and the type has been photographed in service with Turkish Cypriot forces, including at a 2014 parade in Lefkoşa (North Nicosia), positioned as an anti-armour asset north of the Green Line.

Joint Forces' MLR40 article also examines a stone-coloured recoilless-rifle Defender 90 shown at the British Army Equipment Exhibition mobility display at Long Valley in June 1990, arguing from detail similarities — the hinged rear seat back and 105 mm ammunition stowage — that it may have been an Otokar prototype or demonstrator, though this identification remains unconfirmed. Production quantities and exact build dates for the gunship batch have not been published.
