History
Otokar of Sakarya began toll-manufacturing Land Rovers in 1966 and in 1987 took on full licence production of the coil-sprung Defender family, its first major defence order. Defender 90, 110 and 130 'softskin' types were assembled from Solihull-produced CKD kits — engines and drivetrains included — mated to Otokar's own locally made chassis and wheels to meet Turkish national-content rules. Licence production ran for around a quarter of a century, into the 2010s, making Otokar one of the most prolific builders of military Defenders outside Solihull.
The soft-top family covered in Joint Forces' MLR41 feature ranges from open patrol Defender 90s with pedestal weapon mounts, through standard three-door 110 soft tops, to truck-cab cargo variants on the 110 and stretched 130/D130 chassis — the latter including Rapier missile tractors for Turkish Air Force airfield defence — plus later wide-body dropside troop carriers. Details characteristic of Otokar production include side-hinged rear tailgates with swing-away spare carriers and windowless canvas canopies, with vehicles delivered in a plain NATO-green finish.
Customers spanned the Turkish Armed Forces, the paramilitary Jandarma and its commando units, and Turkish forces on Cyprus, where open Defender 90s with mounted guns have long patrolled north of the Green Line; from the mid-1990s Otokar Defenders adopted the 2,495 cc 300 Tdi four-cylinder diesel as armies moved to all-diesel fleets. Overall production figures have not been published.
