Defence Support Group

History

DSG was established on 1 April 2008 under The Defence Support Group Trading Fund Order 2008, merging the Army Base Repair Organisation with the Defence Aviation Repair Agency into a single executive agency and wholly owned trading fund. Headquartered at Andover, it employed around 3,500 staff on an annual turnover in excess of £200 million, running former ABRO and DARA sites including Colchester, Bovington, Catterick, Donnington, Stafford, Warminster, Ashchurch, Sealand and St Athan, and supplying maintenance, repair and overhaul for both land and air equipment.

With a largely civilian workforce to keep occupied, DSG pursued a number of study projects of its own, and Project HEBE — named for the Greek goddess of youth — was one. Around 800 Defender 130 battlefield ambulances had been built under Land Rover's Project PULSE from 1996; the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns made soft-skinned ambulances untenable, leaving a surplus. HEBE replaced the ambulance body with an off-the-shelf pick-up cargo bed, added a glassfibre high-line cab roof and fitted the Wolf fleet's Project REMUS internal roll-over protection, producing a four-seat double cab with an 800 kg payload, intended as a mortar section vehicle and convoy escort. Three prototypes were followed by production at DSC Colchester, including six white-painted, soft-topped vehicles delivered to the British Army Training Liaison Staff in Kenya in autumn 2011. Up to 500 conversions were once discussed; a 2021 Freedom of Information response put the actual total at 168.

The agency did not last much longer than the programme. On 1 April 2015 Babcock International bought DSG's land repair and maintenance business — the vehicle workshops, Colchester among them — for £140 million, and the remaining electronics and components business became the Defence Electronics and Components Agency (DECA), which remains in MoD ownership.
