Kahn Design / Chelsea Truck Company

Bradford customiser founded by Afzal Kahn in the late 1990s on the proceeds of his RS-R alloy wheel, which moved into bodywork and coachbuilding in 2003 and in 2013 opened the Chelsea Truck Company on the King's Road to rework Defenders and Jeep Wranglers. Its Flying Huntsman 6×6 of 2015 stretched the Defender 110 onto a third axle with a GM V8.

History

Afzal Kahn's route into vehicles was through wheels. His RS-R alloy of 1996 sold out its first run of a thousand, and the money set up A. Kahn Design in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in the late 1990s. From 2003 the firm added styling kits, interiors and full coachbuilt conversions to the wheel business, working mostly on Range Rovers, Bentleys, Rolls-Royces and Aston Martins for a customer base that wanted a car nobody else had. By 2011 it employed about eighty people, twenty of them designers.

The Land Rover side got its own name in 2013 when Kahn opened the Chelsea Truck Company in a showroom on the King's Road, Chelsea, dedicated to reworked Defenders and Jeep Wranglers: wide-arch bodies, X-Lander grilles, leather interiors and, for the Defender, engine swaps. Its most ambitious product was the Flying Huntsman, unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, whose 6×6 version added 400 mm to the chassis and a third driven axle behind a GM LS3 V8. The Kahn group today spans Kahn Design, the Chelsea Truck Company, Project Kahn, Flying Huntsman, Designio and Racing Green, with showrooms in Chelsea and Kensington and a flagship on Kirkstall Road in Leeds.
