Mickleover Transport

History

Mickleover Transport Co Ltd built the British Army's first purpose-designed Land Rover field ambulance. The requirement, FV18044 — 'Ambulance, 2-stretcher, 4x4, Rover 7' — was met on the 109-inch Series II chassis with the 2.25-litre engine, in a raised body kept low enough to fly inside the RAF transport aircraft of the day and given a distinctive chamfered lower rear panel for departure angle off-road. Mickleover built these in 1961–62; production then passed to Marshall of Cambridge, which used the same FV18044 designation and went on to build roughly 2,000 of the first-generation ambulances into the early 1980s, making Marshall rather than Mickleover the name usually attached to the type.

Almost nothing about the company itself could be established. A COACHBUILD.com thread titles it 'Mickleover Transport Ltd., London' and shows van bodywork on Ford Thames and Karrier chassis dated 1960 and 1961, which suggests a general commercial-vehicle bodybuilder rather than a military specialist; no address, founding date, ownership or closure date was traced, and no connection to the Derbyshire village of Mickleover is established.

One source conflicts with the standard account and is recorded here rather than resolved. A Dutch article on the Netherlands Army's Land Rover 109 ambulances states that the Dutch government bought 534 examples of the battlefield ambulance 'built by Mickleover Transport Co. Ltd', with the first delivered in 1979 and the type in use or store until the late 1990s. That is fifteen years after the British sources have Mickleover handing production to Marshall, and the Dutch vehicles are Series III rather than Series II. Either Mickleover continued building ambulance bodies for export long after the UK contract, or the attribution is a carry-over of the original designer's name; nothing found settles it.
