Precision Engineering Products (Suffolk) Ltd
The Suffolk engineering firm that worked with Peter Moy on the Moy Conveyor Land Rover — a Land Rover carrying its own powered baggage conveyor for airport ramp work, of which the 1958 Series II 109 in the Dunsfold Collection is believed to be the only long-wheelbase example.
History
The Moy Conveyor was the idea of Peter Moy, who saw that a Land Rover carrying its own powered conveyor could drive up to an airliner and load or unload baggage without separate ground equipment. The Dunsfold Collection's record of the surviving 109-inch vehicle states that the conveyor system was conceived and designed by Moy himself, with the conversion work carried out in association with Precision Engineering Products (Suffolk) Ltd. A prototype had been built on a Series I in 1958; the long-wheelbase car began life as a 1958 Series II 109 press-fleet vehicle (YAC 498), sold to Moy in May 1960 and rebuilt with a heavily altered upper body carrying the conveyor. Production versions went on the shorter 88-inch chassis and were delivered to BEA and BOAC at Heathrow.
Beyond that credit, the firm is undocumented. A company of exactly that name — Precision Engineering Products (Suffolk) Limited, number 00522663 — appears in the UK register, incorporated on 13 August 1953 and dissolved on 17 April 2018, latterly a non-trading company with its registered office care of Filtrona plc in Milton Keynes. The name and period fit the conveyor work, but nothing found links that registration to the Moy conversion beyond the name itself, and no account of the company's own products, works or workforce could be traced.
