Penman Armoured Land Rover Mk.4

History

The PSNI's Tangi armoured patrol vehicles, built through the 1990s on Defender 110 chassis, were replaced from about 2011 by a new generation of public-order Land Rovers. OVIK Solutions won the contract for the Pangolin ALR Mk.IV, and after Penman Engineering of Dumfries protested the award it was allowed to build its own, very similar, version: the Penman ALR Mk.IV, which the company called its Public Order Land Rover. Thirty production vehicles were built concurrently with OVIK's Pangolin B2 batch, both on a heavily uprated Defender 110 Puma chassis, each carrying a crew of six with no armament; they followed the two limited-production Hobson Ranger (Thetis) prototypes that were still in PSNI service. The Penman photograph on WarWheels shows three new vehicles in PSNI white with blue and yellow battenburg along the cab and body sides, a plain black grille panel, bumper and skid plate, caged blue beacons at the front corners of the roof with a sun-visor slab over the mesh-guarded screen, and louvred vents in the body sides. The registry's model is built on its OVIK Pangolin as the queue asks, with Penman's plainer front, the visor slab, the extra vents and the PSNI decals; the registrations in the photograph are not legible, so the plate is left blank.
