UNTAC Perentie 110 (Cambodia 1993)

History

Australia's Force Communications Unit was among the first contingents into Cambodia when the UN Transitional Authority (UNTAC) deployed in 1992 to oversee the peace settlement and the 1993 elections, and it took its own Perentie Land Rovers — the Jaguar Rover Australia 110s built for Project Perentie with the Isuzu 4BD1 diesel. Repainted UN white with black UN lettering and given UNTAC registration plates, the soft-top 4x4s ran the unit's signals detachments between the provincial capitals in the tropical heat, which is why the tilt sides were rolled up under the roof as often as not.

The Memorial's photograph shows one at Kampong Cham in April 1993: white Perentie 4x4 soft top, canvas roof up with the side curtains rolled and strapped to the cant rails, UN on the body sides, UNTAC-1345 on a plate on the bull bar and a dark waist band. The registry model strips the canvas side walls from the Perentie soft top, adds hoops, cant rails and rolled curtains, and applies the UN livery.
